An Australian tobacconist was fined A$37,560 by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for illegally possessing a large number of e-cigarette products. The TGA and other departments jointly seized more than 4,900 e-cigarettes and other tobacco products.

According to Mirage News on December 17, a tobacconist on the Sunshine Coast of Australia was fined A$37,560 by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for allegedly illegally possessing a large number of e-cigarette products.

In a joint enforcement operation held on September 18 and 19, the TGA worked with the Queensland Health Department and the Queensland Police Service to execute search warrants in several stores. More than 4,900 e-cigarettes, nearly 300 nicotine bags and other tobacco products were seized in the operation.

Since July 1, 2024, law enforcement officers have been visiting retail stores nationwide to publicize laws prohibiting the illegal sale, possession and advertising of e-cigarette products. Once violations are found, law enforcement officers will conduct searches and confiscate illegal e-cigarettes and other illegal products.

"There will be severe penalties for those who illegally supply e-cigarettes in vape shops or other retail settings. The TGA will continue to work with state and territory authorities to remove illegal e-cigarettes from the market and take action against people and businesses that breach the new laws."
